6th-Ranked Pirates Pound Bruins For Best Start Ever

George Fox (6-6 overall, 2-2 NWC) hosts Willamette University on Friday.

(NEWBERG) - Running their record to 13-0 for the best start in team history, the Whitworth Pirates jumped out to an early lead and were never threatened in an 83-53 rout of the George Fox in Northwest Conference men’s basketball action Saturday night at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym.

In topping the 12-0 start by the 2002-03 Whitworth team, the Pirates jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and reached a double-digit lead for good on a layup by Jon Young to make it 18-7 with 10:17 left in the first half.

The Pirates hit a 20-point lead with 6:32 to go when Ryan Symes’ jumper made it 29-9.

USC Pounds Oregon State, 91-46

Oregon State shot 31.5 percent from the field compared to 66 percent for the Trojans.

(CORVALLIS) - USC's Lodrick Stewart had a career-high 28 points, to lead the Trojans to a 91-46 Pac-10 win on Saturday over Oregon State at Gill Coliseum.

Taj Gibson added 20 points and five rebounds for the Trojans (13-4 overall, 3-1 Pac-10).

Angelo Tsagarakis had 10 points to lead Oregon State (8-8 overall, 0-3 Pac-10).

Bruins Earn Share of NWC Lead as Posts Punish Pirates

George Fox improved to 7-4 overall with its third straight win and 3-1 in the conference.

(NEWBERG) - With four post players combining for 44 points on 19-of-27 from the field, as George Fox handed the Whitworth College Pirates their first conference loss of the season and earned a share of the league lead with a 66-50 victory in Northwest Conference women’s basketball Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym.

Melissa Marek-Farris, who scored eight of the Bruins’ first 12 points, led all first-half scorers with 11 points.

PLU and Whitman College are also 3-1, and the University of Puget Sound, at 2-1, played later Saturday.

Whitman Downs Linfield, 53-48

The Wildcats dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

(McMINNVILLE) - Whitman erased an eight-point deficit and went on to defeat Linfield 53-48 in Northwest Conference action Saturday afternoon at Ted Wilson Gym.

The Missionaries, 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the NWC, held Linfield scoreless for more than seven minutes to turn the tide in their favor.

Linfield led by as many as eight in the first half, taking a 27-22 lead at intermission. The opening half was fairly even statistically.

Sun Devils Defeat Beavers

The Beavers return to action on January 19th when they host the University of Idaho Vandals.

(TEMPE, Ariz.) - A day after splitting its dual meet with No. 2 Arizona and Northern Arizona, the Oregon State swim team fell to Arizona State 82-180.

The Beavers (5-7, 0-4 Pacific-10 Conference) won three races and delivered another solid performance.

Saori Haruguchi won the 200 Backstroke (2:02.70), earning her 18th dual meet win of the season and 33rd of her career.

#16 Oregon Shocks #1 UCLA, 68-66

Oregon beat UCLA when it was ranked No. 1 in 1974

(EUGENE) - Ducks guard Aaron Brooks scored 25 points, including the game-winning base-line jumper with :13 seconds left, as #16 Oregon handed #1 UCLA its first loss of the season, 68-66 on Saturday at McArthur Court.

Maarty Leunen added 18 points, and seven rebounds, while Bryce Taylor chipped in 11 points for the Ducks (14-1 overall, 2-1 Pac-10)

UCLA was led by Josh Shipp who had 16 points and five rebounds.

Oregon shot 47.8 percent from the field compared to UCLA who shot 41.8 percent.

ODFW Angler And Aquatic Education Program Needs Instructors

You must be at least 21-years-old to participate in the instructor program.

(SALEM) - If you have a passion for fishing and want to share your love of the sport with others, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for you.

The ODFW’s Angler and Aquatic Education Program is recruiting individuals to become instructors to introduce children and adults to the sport of fishing.

This training will provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully share their fishing expertise with others.

ODFW Schedules Outdoor Skills Workshop For Women And Families

Classes include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, fly fishing, outdoor cooking, map and compass, snowshoeing, winter survival, GPS use, home firearm safety and archery.

(SALEM) - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife staff members are taking reservations for winter outdoor skills workshops held in conjunction with the agency’s Passport to the Outdoors and Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) programs.

A Small Game Hunting Clinic will be held Jan. 20th at EE Wilson Wildlife Area near Corvallis.

The annual BOW Winter Workshop will be held Feb. 23rd-25th at Suttle Lake near Sisters.

Space is limited and openings fill quickly.

The Small Game Hunting Clinic is open to anyone interested in learning about small game hunting.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the Mary’s Peak Hound Club, will introduce participants to all aspects of small game hunting including equipment, working with dogs, shotgun skills, safety and ethics

Oregon State Shocks UCLA, 56-52

Oregon State broke a 5-game losing streak against UCLA and the Beavers picked up their first win in Pauley Pavilion since a 79-65 victory on Dec. 22nd, 2001.

(LOS ANGELES) - Oregon State’s women’s basketball team earned its first victory in Pauley Pavilion since 2001 when the Beavers stunned UCLA, 56-52, on Friday night.

Oregon State (6-6 overall, 1-2 Pac-10) outscored UCLA (8-9overall, 2-3 Pac-10) by a 17-14 margin over the game’s final eight minutes to hold on to the victory.

Senior guard Casey Nash sparked the OSU offense by scoring 10 straight points to open the second half and helped the Beavers build a 31-26 lead.
