Wolves, Yotes Battle to 2-2 Tie

(MONMOUTH) - WOU StadiumAlbertson scored two goals in the first half and Western Oregon scored two goals in the second, but it was WOU's Jane Svendson's five-yard shot six minutes into the overtime period that sealed matters during a 3-2 women's non-conference soccer win for the Wolves on Saturday afternoon at th eWOU Soccer Field.

The result moved Western Oregon's record to 4-1-1 on the season, while Albertson is now 0-4.

Allie Dufault single-handedly gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the first half, scoring at 18:18 and 33:06. The Wolves did the same in the second half, behind the leg of Erica Hibbard.

Gonzaga Beats OSU to Claim Zaher/Hensor Classic Crown

Xavier Also Wins.

(CORVALLIS) - OSU SoccerThe Oregon State men’s soccer team fell to Gonzaga 4-1 in the finale of the OSU Zaher/Hensor Memorial at Lorenz Field on Saturday night. In the first game, Xavier defeated UC Davis, 2-1.

Though not a true tournament, Gonzaga claimed first place in the Zaher/Hensor Memorial thanks to its two victories this weekend. Oregon State and Xavier each had a win and a loss, but OSU earned second place on goal differential (zero to -2). UC Davis, with two losses, finished in fourth place.

Gonzaga junior forward George Josten was the star of the weekend, as he had a hand in six of his team’s seven goals.

Wolves Dig Out of Hole, Top Saints in Five

(MONMOUTH) - WOU logoWestern Oregon rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Saint Martins in five games during a wild Saturday night volleyball match-up at the Physical Education Building, 27-30, 21-30, 30-20, 30-22, 15-11.

The outcome gave the Wolves a win in their first match at home this season, and also gave them their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory of 2006. WOU improved to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Saint Martin's dropped to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in the GNAC.

Katrina Johnson had 21 kills and hit .320 on the night, and Shakira Johnson added 20 kills for the Wolves.

Wolves Spoil Linfield's Debut, Top Wildcats, 28-14

(McMINNVILLE) - Wou vs LinfieldEliot Vinzant rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Western Oregon Wolves defeat Linfield, 28-14, in front of 3,500 at Maxwell Field on Saturday night.

The WOU win and Linfield loss met the criteria for a number of milestones. It was WOU's first win over the Wildcats since 1997. It was Linfield's first loss in 41 regular-season games, dating back to 2001. And it put a damper on the opening of the Joe Smith era, Linfield's new head coach.

It also put WOU at 2-0 on the season, heading into a date with NCAA Division II national power Texas A&M-Kingsville, next Saturday at McArthur Field (1:00 PM).

Women's Soccer: Southern Oregon 3, George Fox 2

Bruins Fall Behind Early in Loss to Raiders.

(ASHLAND) - George Fox Coach Andy HetheringtonFalling behind by three goals in the first 30 minutes, the George Fox University Bruins battled back but came up a goal short in a 3-2 loss to the Southern Oregon University Raiders in a non-conference women’s soccer game Saturday afternoon here at University Field.

Chelsea Arakawa got the Raiders off to a huge start when she scored the first two of the team’s three goals.

Arakawa’s first shot went in only 5:44 into the game off a pass from the far corner from Kelly Vilarino.

Men's Soccer: George Fox 4, Northwest Christian 0

It’s All Relative as Bruins Blank First-Year Beacons.

(NEWBERG) - George Fox's Dan PotterTwin brothers Kyle and Brian Story combined for two goals and an assist and cousins Matt Gurlides and Garrett Blizzard did the same, leading the George Fox University Bruins to a 4-0 win over the Northwest Christian College Beacons in a non-conference men’s soccer match Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.

After taking 17 shots in the first 32 minutes with none of them going in, the Bruins finally broke through at the 35:13 mark when Dan Potter crossed from the right corner to Kyle Story near the left post, and Story headed it over Beacon keeper Shaun DeBow for his first goal of the season.

Ducks Nip New Hampshire For First Win

The Ducks return to Corvallis on Sunday to meet Iona at 11:00 AM.

(CORVALLIS) - Ducks women's soccerNicole Garbin scored in the 53rd minute to lift Oregon to its first victory of the season, a 1-0 triumph over New Hampshire Friday at the OSU Soccer Classic.

Midfielder Jen Cameron played a perfect ball up the middle of the field to Garbin, who raced past the Wildcat defense and beat goalkeeper Lynn Gugliuzza to the upper right corner of the net. It was the 23rd career goal for Garbin, a senior from Wailuku, Hawaii.

Wolves Clip Lewis & Clark, 2-1

Western Oregon will take on another non-conference opponent on Saturday, hosting Albertson at 1:00 PM.

(PORTLAND) - WO logoLiorah Riutzel had a goal and an assist, helping Western Oregon battle back from an early Lewis & Clark goal to win a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer match on Friday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.

Riutzel picked up a loose ball and scored early in the second half to tie the contest, and then flipped a pass to teammate Amy Weberg who lobbed a shot in over the keeper with less than 13 minutes left to seal the win for the Wolves.
