Salem-News.com Sports (October 08, 2006 18:36)Western Oregon Golfers Fair Well at Final Tune-Up Salem-News.com SPORTSThe Wolves and Whitworth shared first place on the men's side with 46 points, while the women trailed only Pirate women, 53 to 61. (TACOMA, Wash.) - Western Oregon's men tied for first and the WOU women captured second Saturday at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational, run at the golf course on the PLU campus.
The race was the final tune-up for Western Oregon before the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, which will be held Oct. 21st in Lacey, Wash.
Freshman Mike Schmidt was WOU's top male runner, crossing the line in second place behind Linfield's Harrison Wilson. Wilson won in 25:14 on the eight kilometer course, while Schmidt ran 25:28.

(CORVALLIS) - Alex Brink went 19-32-270 yards and a touchdown, and Jason Hill caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown as the Washington State Cougars won a defensive battle against the Oregon State Beavers, 13-6 Saturday night at Reser Stadium.
The Cougar defense forced four Oregon State turnovers (3 fumbles, 1 interception) and held Beavers star running back Yvenson Bernard to 91 yards on 17 carries.

(MONMOUTH) - Humboldt State, known for its’ big-play offense, used big plays from its defense and special teams to stun Western Oregon 29-21 on Saturday afternoon at McArthur Field.
The loss was the first of the season for the Wolves, who fell to 4-1 on the year. The Lumberjacks are now 4-1 as well.
A 55-yard interception return for a touchdown by Derric Andrews, and another was set-up on a 74-yard interception return by Kyle Killingsworth. Killingsworth also had a 93-yard punt return for six points in the third quarter stared the comeback.

Game time in Tacoma, Wash., is set for 2:30 PM. (SALEM) - Pacific University defeated Willamette University, 3-1, in a Northwest Conference game at Sparks Field in Salem Saturday afternoon.
Pacific improved to 6-2-1 overall, including 3-2-1 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 1-9-1 overall, 0-5-1 in the NWC.
Pacific scored twice in the first 10 minutes. Matt McDonough recorded the opening goal just 1:47 into the game on a shot from eight yards that went off the left post, then off a defender near the right post. Colby White earned an assist on the play.

The No. 38 M&M's Ford will once again start on the pole at Talladega Superspeedway.
The No. 38 car captured the pole position at Talladega for the third consecutive NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race Saturday, prevailing during Discount Food Mart Qualifying for Sunday's running of the UAW-Ford 500.
This time, however, the driver of the car was NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series rookie David Gilliland, not Elliott Sadler.

George Fox (4-6-1, NWC 2-4-1) visits Linfield College, while Puget Sound (6-1-3, NWC 4-1-2) hosts Pacific University. (TACOMA, Wash.) - Northwest Conference scoring leader Adrienne Folsom notched her ninth goal of the season in the 73rd minute, lifting the 24th-ranked University of Puget Sound Loggers past the upset-minded George Fox University Bruins 1-0 in a women's soccer match Saturday afternoon here at the East Athletic Field.
Although the Loggers controlled the first half offensively, out-shooting the Bruins 12-2, George Fox goalie Jessica Cardwell made six saves to keep the game scoreless until halftime. The Bruin defense slowed the Loggers down even more in the second half, limiting them to only seven shots, but Folsom finally broke through for an unassisted goal at the 72:52 mark for the only score of the game.

The Beavers will continue their stay in Los Angeles on Saturday, traveling to USC for a 9:30 AM dual meet against the women of Troy and CS Northridge. (PALO ALTO, Calif) - Swimming at Stanford University for the first time ever, the Oregon State women’s swimming team split its 2006-07 season opening dual meet with the Cardinal and the San Jose State Spartans. The Beavers (1-1, 0-1 Pacific-10) defeated the Spartans (0-2) 99-39 and fell to the Cardinal (2-0, 1-0 Pacific-10) 45-92.
“It was a good showing for us in our first dual meet of the season,” OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz said. “I was very impressed with what I saw and overall it was an outstanding meet.”
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Megan Evans wasted little time placing herself in the OSU record books. Her second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:20.13) was the sixth fastest time in school history.

(SALEM) - Willamette University defeated Pacific University, 4-0, at Sparks Field in Salem Saturday afternoon. It was the Bearcats' ninth shutout in 11 games and WU's 5th shutout in a row.
Willamette has not allowed a goal in 537 minutes and 16 seconds. With the loss, Pacific falls to 2-6-2 overall, 0-6-1 in the NWC.
Meghan Anderson of Willamette recorded a goal or an assist for the 7th consecutive game.
